STUFF PEOPLE ASK US...
IS ARTIFACTS CHINA'S LARGEST ANTIQUES SHOP?
ARTifacts displays literally thousands of pieces of beautiful and mystical Chinese artifacts, antique furniture, architectural pieces, and ancient arts. Total on-site display space in our new six story building in Shanghai exceeds 7,200 sqm ( 72,000 sq.ft.). While we believe that we are indeed the largest privately owned Chinese antiques shop in the world, we are most proud of the stunning quality and variety, rather than the quantity, of the pieces we have collected. Only a portion of our collection is publicly displayed at any given time.

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE FAMOUS SHANGHAI GREEN ANTIQUES?
Shanghai Green Antiques was rebranded ARTifacts in 2016. We feel that the ARTifacts name better reflects the type of pieces you find in our dazzling ARTifacts MUSEum and ARTIfacts SHOWroom collections, including ancient Chinese art objects and artifacts, Ming and Qing Dynasty architectural salvage, and antique Chinese furniture. We appreciate the tremendous support of our friends who have made Shanghai Green Antiques the world famous brand it has become, and we will continue to use joint branding for the next several years as we gradually transition from Shanghai Green Antiques to ARTifacts.

DOES THE INFERRED COMMITMENT TO "GREEN" IN GREEN ANTIQUES CONTINUE?
With only a few exceptions, no trees are chopped down to make any of the items in the ARTifacts Collection. Either our wooden pieces are entirely original and made from the wood of trees which were chopped down centuries ago, or the pieces are lightly repaired with old reclaimed timbers from Ming and Qing Dynasty buildings which have recently been torn down. Either way, we remain committed to our "Green" environmentally friendly goals - re-utilizing something old is almost always more environmentally friendly than making something new.

WHAT DOES YOUR ANTIQUES SHOP HAVE TO DO WITH ARTIFACTS CORE ANTIQUES RESCUE MISSION?
Our core mission was and is to save old and culturally significant tangible art pieces from the wrecking balls and wood burning stoves of China,. We feel that this goal can only be achieved on a relatively large scale if the antiques and ancient items are viewed through the lens of an artist designer - artistic re-purposing and re-use by modern people in modern ways. Hence the emphasis on residential and commercial interior design uses which you will find in every corner of our ARTifacts SHOWroom, Each and every piece in our collection was lovingly hand-made long long ago by the best local artisans of the day, is unique and special, and just waiting for a new home, office, shop, restaurant, temple, gallery, museum or lobby in which it can continue to be loved, cherished and appreciated.

HOW EXPENSIVE ARE THE ANTIQUES YOU SELL?
Many items in our ARTifacts SHOWroom collection, while being cherished by antiques collectors, are also quite approachable, affordable and sought after by interior designers and homeowners alike. We have small rustic provincial items which sell for as little as RMB50 to RMB150, Qing Dynasty carvings from RMB100 and up, and many box and basket type furnishing pieces available for between RMB200 and RMB500. Much depends of course on the age and rarity of the item you choose, but we have tried very hard to make sure that a large portion of our collection consists of affordable antique pieces which will not cost significantly more than comparable new items of the same type. .We do not carry many reproductions, and the few we do have are clearly marked as such.

WHO IS ARTIFACTS' CURATOR AND CHIEF "PICKER"?
Our ARTifacts MUSEum and ARTifacts SHOWroom curator Jason Chen also serves as our chief picker. Notwithstanding his tender age, Jason is a nationally certified and internationally IPA recognized Chinese antiques appraiser. His knowledge and interest in antiques stems from his upbringing in a small village in Jiangsu Province, where he took winter baths in what can best be described as a mega wok, fired from below with sticks collected behind his house.
A lifelong picker, Jason's search continues as he travels to villages, towns and cities far and wide searching for just the right Chinese antiques and artifacts to add to the magnificent ARTiifacts Collection. Of course, Jason is also the first speed-dial call from most of the Chinese pickers around the country when a building is going to be demolished or they have a particularly interesting find, which doesn't hurt his ability to source spectacular finds for the collection. Call or email Jason if you would like for him to help your search.

WHO STAGES THE INCREDIBLY INVITING ARTIFACTS SHOWROOM ?
The editing and inspiration for our unique ARTifacts SHOWroom collection and display style comes from our designer in chief, Liza G., a world renown interior designer who splits her time between luxury home projects in the USA and China. Liza keeps us on our toes as she ensures that we choose, position, use and repurpose antiques in conjunction with modern western furniture and furnishings in the most practical and beautiful settings.
Liza G. has also greatly influenced the direction of the collection over several decades of extended family outings to the most remote hinterlands of China, along with an entourage including our founder, our chief picker, our property manager, and even grandma Sharon. Her design direction has resulted in our equal emphasis on beauty and usefulness, where important and collectible pieces sit side by side with simple but unique countryside items. Check out our Design Scrapbook to see a sampling of the wonderful homes and spaces which Liza G has designed, each with just the right balance of sophisticated Chinese antiques and modern furniture and furnishings.

WHO FOUNDED ARTIFACTS?
Our founder and chief collection accumulator, Mr. D, is an international corporate lawyer who currently heads the Shanghai office of one of the world's leading law firms. Arriving in China 35 years ago, the American executive began collecting artifacts, antiques and sensational stories from every town and village he visited. His passion to collect ever more sophisticated, beautiful and useful ancient provincial antiques and artworks corresponded with both the mass destruction of antiques arising from China's rapid modernization drive, as well as his decades long collaboration with his sister, Liza G,, designing, building, decorating and furnishing some of the most fabulous luxury villas in Shanghai China and the pacific coast of Florida.
